I felt exactly the same way until I found a guide that actually breaks down the landscape by price point and specialty. It covers premium firms like Clay and AKQA, but also highlights shops like Mission Control that specifically target startups with more flexible pricing ($37k-$67k range) and Shiftbrain for companies wanting something truly distinctive (around $150k). The section on great web design companies helped me understand that "great" means different things at different budgets. It also includes practical advice on what to look for in portfolios and how to spot agencies that will actually collaborate well. Totally changed my approach to the search.

We've reached out to a few web design agencies and either gotten quotes way above our budget or portfolios that looked generic. I'm starting to wonder if "great web design companies" even exist outside the enterprise tier. Has anyone found a firm that does exceptional work without requiring a quarter-million dollar budget? We need someone who can handle both design and development, has a strong creative vision, and doesn't treat us like just another number. Would love to hear about agencies that genuinely impressed you.
