When should teams start using data driven testing in automation?

I’ve been exploring different automation strategies recently, and one concept that keeps coming up is data driven testing. From what I understand, it allows the same test script to run multiple times with different sets of data, which seems much more efficient than writing separate scripts for each scenario.

For example, instead of writing multiple login tests, you can store different usernames and passwords in a CSV or database and execute the same test logic with different inputs.

This seems especially useful for:

  • login validations

  • form testing

  • API request variations

  • large datasets

What I’m curious about is how teams usually manage large datasets in automation frameworks. Do you prefer Excel, JSON, or database-driven approaches?

Would love to hear how others are implementing data driven testing in real-world projects.
