How to File a Commercial Property Tax Protest and Lower Your Costs
Permalink

Filing a commercial property tax protest is an effective way to reduce your business expenses if you believe your property’s assessed value is too high. Start by reviewing your annual property appraisal notice, which details your property’s market value and tax assessment. Compare your property’s value to similar properties in your area and gather evidence such as recent sales data, income and expense reports, or photos of the property. You can file your protest online, by mail, or in person—usually by May 15 or within 30 days of receiving the notice. After filing, you may be offered an informal review with the appraisal district or proceed to a formal hearing with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). A successful commercial property tax protest can lower your assessed value and lead to substantial savings on your annual tax bill.
